THE RESUME OF LECTURE

THE RESUME OF LECTURE ABOUT “THE POWER OF CATEGORY AND NETWORKING”

By Ratna Ayu

On Monday, December 14th 2009, Dr. Marsigit gives us a lecture in Psychology of Mathematics Study about “The Power of Category and Networking”. He also give us an assignment, that is write an article about his lecture that we study that day. In fact, there is no shadow in my mind when he was starting this lecture, and even only a few concept in my mind along this.

Seem likely that, he also feels what happen with his students because no one ask him about this lecture, and of course the assignment too. Then, he writes on the whiteboard “the most stupid questions is the questions you do not ask”. I don’t know what is it only in my mind or it is right in fact. But, there are some friends who agree with me. Honestly, I also don’t ask a question about this lecture and assignment because again, there is no shadow in my mind, I confused.

The assignment which I know is write an article about “The Power of Category and Networking” with a same title. Finally, I go home with millions of questions. What is category? What is networking? What is the relationship between both term? And more than, in my mind, appear some specific questions. What are the terms “category” and “networking” which intended in this context? I so confused. I believe, if I don’t know this terms, what can I write an article about it, moreover a good article. I has started with zero concept. Therefore, I must searching in internet about the articles relate to the terms, theme, and title. After searched, I need a long time to understanding.

Apart from the fact that my understand of concept in this lecture is few, at first I want to writing the resume according to Dr. Marsigit’s lecture and some references, likes my understand as follow. Of course this is not so good, moreover, this is far from perfect.

Dr. Marsigit said that according to Immanuel Kant (1771), we can make a judgment from a number of characteristics. They are quantitative, qualitative, category, and relationship. According to Dr. Marsigit, the bases of each are follows.

1. Plural, partial, and singular are bases of quantitative.

2. Universal, partial, and unique are bases of qualitative.

3. “If...then” statement and “if and only if” statement are bases of relationship.

4. Identity (A = A) and contradiction (B not A) are bases of category.

Category and networking be available in our mind.

The process to make categories is called categorization. First, it is started with categorizing the category from phenomena until the noumena. According to Encyclopedia, a phenomenon (plural: phenomena) is any observable occurence whereas a noumenon (plural: noumena) classically refers to an object of human inquiry, understanding or cognition. According to Kant, the attempt to preserve a realist orientation then distinguished between the appearances of things (phenomena) and the category of understanding and things in themselves (noumena), as unknown something. Something that we must know is when we employ a concept of some type to describe or also categorize noumena, in fact we are employing a way of describing or categorizing phenomena.

The second, categorization needs references, sciences, and also ideas. For example, references about category (characteristic or criteria) as one of thinking method. According to the references, category consist of category and networking. There are some scientist who define the terms “category” and “networking”, such as scientist A said that category consists of definitions, functions, object, and componen. And neither is networking. This is reason why categorization needs sciences. After we have references and sciences about category, the last step is highlighting idea, that is yourwork.

According to the lecture, steps to write an article about “The Power of Category and Networking” are follows.

1. Title

2. Abstract

3. Introduction

4. The power of Category

5. The power of Networking

6. The Relationship between Category and Networking

7. Conclusion

8. References

The example of category and networking can be seen at case about “The Phenomena of Mathematics Education”. Before we write an article about it, we must have awareness of it. Then, we issued of intension about abstraction, idealization, category, and networking. Abstraction is the value of mathematics, such as feeling and characteristics. Idealization is the way to get mathematical concept, such as we have an assumption that the line is straight, the angle is taper, etc. Category is the group in a complete system. Networking is complex system crossing each other.

This is my simple article according to Dr. Marsigit’s lecture about “The Power of Category and Networking”. The next my assignment is write an article about it. It is a challenge for me. One sentence that I remember from him, “the most stupid questions is the questions you do not ask”. This sentence gave the effect for me. “Talk less, do more” is good, but “talk less (for nothing, to no effect, without result), ask more (to study), and do more (to pray, effort, work, creativity, give)” is better to do, isn’t it??
